The Prophet is the leader of the Islamic religion and the Messenger of God. As such, he has been revered as a divine messenger and prophet by many people. A large number of these people regard him as a divinely-inspired prophet and believe that he is the messenger of God. Others, however, regard him as a human messenger who has been chosen by God to deliver a message.

The Prophet was born in the city of Mecca, in the territory of the present-day Saudi Arabia. His birth is documented in the Quran, which states that God has revealed the Quran to the Prophet through the angel Gabriel. The exact date of the Prophet's birth is unknown, but some Muslims believe that he was born on the fourth day of the Islamic month of Ramadan in the year 1 AH / 628 CE. Others believe that he was born on the first day of the month of December in the year 757 CE.

The Quran contains a number of hadiths (oral teachings from the Prophet) that are used to interpret the meaning of the text. According to a hadith in the Quran, the Prophet was taken to the angel Gabriel in a cave and was told by him to recite what he would be told. This is why the Quran is called the "recitation of the messenger of God."

The Prophet's father was a wealthy merchant and his mother was a devout Muslim. When the Prophet was four years old, his family relocated to a town called Abilawira in the Hijaz, where they stayed for four years. In his childhood, the Prophet was keen to learn about religion and to follow the laws of Islam.
